The NKPSA Armed Forces Appreciation Derby was held Saturday August 28 with a final tally of 43 fishing participants, 20+ military family members, 23 captains, and 20 shore volunteers. The participants hailed from all over the country, New Hampshire to Washington and Florida to California. The 43 participants weighed in 34 fish with the winning silver fish weighing in at 7.2 lbs. The total fish keepers reported at the scales was 53. The goal of this derby is to catch as many fish as possible and our captains exceeded expectations. While the captains targeted silver and pink salmon, the boats were kept busy all day releasing kings, wild silvers and bottom fish mostly at skunk bay, point no point and possession.
As the event closed, I was personally thanked on behalf of NKPSA by over half of the participants. A few participants said that this was the most fun they have had all year. NKPSA must be doing something right for a bunch of 20 and 30 year olds to say that the best time of the year for them was spent with an older generation. NKPSA should be very proud!
As a last thought I want to thank all of NKPSA for the all the generosity and help it took to pull this derby off and I am very proud to be part of this organization.
