Went out on Saturday with some guys from work on a charter out of Kingston by Hooked Up fishing charters. (Hookedupfishingwa.com). The trips are 8 hours, or until the boat is limited, and the cost is what most charters are charging for 4 hours.
We saw virtually no nets, and our guide was checking with other guides who had zero hits and zero fish.
We limited the boat before noon, steadily. We lost nearly as many as fish as we landed, due to angler errors (2 guys had never caught a salmon in their lives). I attribute our success to the skill and work ethic of our guides. They clearly LOVE fishing, and are in it for the fun of Landing fish. They were constantly scheming, pulling gear, updating bait, pulling lines to clearing seaweed, and trying new colors, depths and presentations when the bite died.
The coho are 3.5 - 5 lbs. the diver was far more popular than the downriggers on this particular day, and accounted for 2/3 of the fish. We ran the riggers from 20-80 and adjusted regularly based off of what was on the screen. For some reason, it was just a diver day. Morning was green/chartreuse/silver dodgers and green hoochies getting hit, and as the morning went on, purple haze dodgers and Ace high purple hoochies/ candlefish got hot. Best success South of the main hoards, near the weather buoy.
If you want fish out of Kingston and don’t have a boat handy, I highly recommend this team.
